SUMMARY OF THE MENTOR TEXT:
Ron McNair woke up on a mid-summer day in South Carolina in quite a rush. He denied breakfast from his mom, donuts from the grocer, and even basketball with a friend. Running into Lake City Library, Ron went right for the books.
Ron usually looks for books with characters that look like him. Today, he was looking for books about aviation. The typical rules of the library is that Black people cannot check out books- only read them inside. Although White women were offering to check the books out for him, he decided that it was unfair.
He stood on the counter and refused to to leave unless he could check out his books. The police came, but eventually the librarian decided that Ron was right- it was not fair! She made him a library card, and he borrowed books about aviation.
In the author’s note, we learn that this book was based on Ron McNair, a famous astronaut, and his fight for equality. The library later dedicated itself to Ron following his death.
